Former Kitimat resident flexing her muscles
Teri Thom, formerly of Kitimat, used to work as a bartender at Wee Geordies' Neighborhood Pub. In January 1982, a friend showed her an old black and white picture book on bodybuilding which instantly fascinated her. One month later, Thom reluctantly headed down to Riverlodge, with a small group of friends to try working out. She was hooked from the start, and trained here steadily for more than two years, before packing up and heading to Vancouver. Earlier in life Thom had attended art school, and with this talent found a job at a picture framing shop. The fresh start, coupled with the superior equipment at Vancouver gyms gave momentum to her progress. Thom has enjoyed considerable success over the years in bodybuilding competitions. in 1988 she competed in the Okanagan Championships held in Kamloops where she won both the Middleweight (114 to 125lbs.), and the Best Overall titles. Kitimat's Mary Craven won the heavyweight division. Thom continued to compete many times during the late 80's and early 90's.She won her weight class at the B.C. Provincial Championships in this period. In 1992 Thom travelled to Kelowna to compete in the Western Canadians, and the Canadian Masters (Over 35) Championships. She won the Middleweight class in the Westerns, and initially was awarded second place in the Masters. This was drug tested, and the winner of the Masters tested positive for anabolic steroid use, and thus was disqualified. Thom was later informed that the Canadian Masters title would go to her. On April 1, 1993, Thom competed in the first annual Canada Cup Championship held in Ottawa. She won both the Middleweight, and the Masters classes. Currently, Thom is training for the top bodybuilding title in the country -- the Canadian National Championships. The show is being held in Montreal. Thom is devoted to a healthy lifestyle, and has never used steroids or other drugs to improve her chances of winning competitions. All of Thom's friends and acquaintances in Kitimat wish her continued success and happiness.
