Company History
Haida Forest Products Ltd. became a separate
and distinct operating company during a planned re-structuring in
September 1989. Previous to that date the company operated as the
Burnaby Remanufacturing Division of Mill & Timber Products Ltd. This
division commenced operation in 1951. The company has operated from
the same location specializing in 'Haida' brand W.R. Cedar sidings
and panellings for over 47 years.
Haida Forest Products has contributed
in a significant way to the development of the demand for W.R. Cedar
and it's subsequent increased value. During the 1950's the company
recognized an opportunity to convert under-utilized Merch grade logs
into kiln dried select knotty rustic bevel sidings. Prior to this
only the clear grades of cedar were kiln dried. The knotty grades
were sold 'green' or not kiln dried, and this limited the marketing
area to the Pacific Northwest area.
One of the major problems encountered
when drying knotty cedar products was the loss of knots that would
shrink at a different rate than the surrounding wood. The company
developed a process of applying hot-melt glue to the reverse side
of these knots to permanently bond them to the surrounding wood. This
not only upgraded the product at the factory but ensured customer
satisfaction because the knots would not fall out after application.
This process was registered under the trade name Permi-Fuse. Today
this process has been copied by almost all companies manufacturing
kiln dried knotty sidings. Presently the company has under development
a process to completely replace unsound knots.
